Nollywood Now Second Biggest Film Industry Worlwide - Al Jazeera

Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry, is now priced at $5 billion and makes more films than Hollywood in the U.S, but less than the largest film industry, India’s Bollywood, according to Al Jazeera.

Nollywood has only 14 cinemas available to a country that is home to more than 170 million people. Each week, Nollywood creates as many as 50 original Nigerian films.

These films are created for a price range starting from $10,000 or below, and are later placed directly onto DVDs to be sold by movie hubs and hawkers in the street.

Nollywood is an industry that has high turnover and challenges the western mode of storytelling. It also employs an astounding number of citizens without government or foreign aid, making it also the second largest industry by number of employees in the country.

I have No Friend In Nollywood - Omotola Jolade

Many movie fans might be shocked to learn that, although she is quite popular among her colleagues, star actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has no friend in Nollywood. The actress revealed this much about her relationship with her fellow thespians in a new interview with entertainment reporter Chux Ohai. She said:

“I don’t have close friends in Nollywood. Everybody is my colleague. Maybe it is because I live very far way from so many people in the industry. Secondly, I’m not very
good at visiting people. I don’t have that kind of luxury.

Omotola also counted herself as fortunate to have been married at a young age. And with a hint of sympathy for upwardly mobile Nigerian women who are still unable to walk down the aisle, especially some of her fellow female artistes, explained the reason why they are finding it difficult to get married.

“If I hadn’t been married earlier, I probably would not be by now. I don’t know if any other man would have been able to handle me the way my husband has done. It is not because I am a bad person. I am actually a very strong woman.

“At a point, you might become so confused and wonder if any man will ever love you for who you are. But, if you are not a very grounded person, you too can contribute to your own problems. I consider myself to be lucky to remain married.”

Asked if she had ever considered the fact that her daughter, who is now 18, could get married any time and she would end up becoming a grandmother before her 40th birthday, Omotola replied,

“I don’t care much about it. I don’t even want to think about that because I got married early. What I always tell people is that all fingers are not equal. The fact that I got married early does not mean that my own child will get married early. My mother didn’t marry early. So it is not hereditary. But if my daughter wants to get married early and I like the guy and If I see that he is responsible enough, why not?”

72 year old Ace Actor Dejumo Lewis who is popularly known for his role as Kabiyesi in the classic NTA TV series The Village Headmaster has come out to complain about his present poor status. He further complained that he has not been financially buoyant even with his high popularity. He disclosed this In an interview with punch. Read below “I must admit that I have not been rich. I am the poorest paid actor even though people call me a legend or an icon. My pensions were not paid at a time even though it is stipend. You would be shocked how much I receive as pension. ‘I had to struggle to pay my rent and my staff. I must admit that right now, I am indebted to the management of the hotel that I am staying. I also owe two of my staff more than three months salary. They have been so loyal and committed to me” I must tell you that I have been living on charity and that is why I have not been able to publish my book or run my publishing company. It has been very rough and tough but because of my focus on what I am doing which would be of great benefit to Nigeria, I have been coping until things become better. I must admit that I am broke”
